Villages in Indonesia may evolve into a global community through exposure of their nature, people, culture and local traditions to the world through tourism and digitalization. Baliwood Land in Bali explores their local potentials by developing their village into a film village that provides a film-based adventure park, a filmmaking campus, a filmmaking platform, and more. The initiative is still in its infancy, yet it holds a promising future for a global brand and a world icon status. Arvin Miracelova (CEO of Baliwood Land) shared the story behind the initiative during a live FKP Webinar on Tuesday, 15 April 2020. I Wayan Sutama (Chairman of Baliwood Land and the head of Abiansemal Dauh Yeh Cani Village in Bali where Baliwood is located) also joined the seminar to describe the collaboration between the local government and the private initiative.

Planning for a a film village in Indonesia named Baliwood Land

Baliwood Land

Baliwood Land started in 2018 with a concept to build film village where the local community are also owner/shareholder of all initiatives undertaken in the village. Since then, Baliwood has initiated various digital and physical projects where locals and foreign visitors get to make, enjoy, and learn about films. Community involvement is not only directly with the films, but also indirectly such as providing accommodation, salon services, and other services.

With the success of the initiative in empowering the local community, it can serve as a model for other villages. Both the seminar speakers stressed that community empowerment and capacity building are key to the success of replicating the model.
